Recognizing the Warning Signs: How Caregivers Can Spot Changes in Loved Ones
Part 6 of 7 | Financial Wellness Series
In the sixth installment of our Financial Wellness Video Series, Doug Buss, founder of YourStyle Financial, joins Rafiq Punjani from Right at Home to discuss one of the most important questions private caregivers can ask:
👉 “What are the signs we should look for that might signal concern?”
Doug encourages caregivers to step back and observe — to notice what has changed with their loved one over time. Often, it’s the small details that matter most.
“Ask yourself, what’s different? Are they sleeping well? Do they feel rested? Are they eating properly? Are they staying hydrated?” Doug explains. “These are the things that tell us more than we realize.”
As we age, our sight and hearing can change, which can lead to miscommunication and frustration. Doug recommends speaking slowly and clearly, rather than loudly — as the issue is often not hearing, but processing speed.
He also highlights the importance of nutrition and hydration. Many adults aren’t drinking enough water, which can affect both energy levels and cognitive health.
By focusing on the basics of daily living — sleep, communication, diet, and hydration — caregivers can identify concerns early and provide support before problems grow more serious.
