Motion Is Lotion: Why Breaking a Sweat Every Day Matters
One of the sayings I’ve heard for years is:
“Motion is lotion.”
The older I get, the more I believe it’s true.
As a financial planner, people often assume most of my conversations revolve around investments, retirement, and money. While that’s certainly part of what we do, I’ve always believed that living a good life involves much more than your finances.
After all, what good is building wealth if you don’t have the health, mobility, and energy to enjoy it?
That’s why I wanted to talk about something that has nothing to do with stock markets and everything to do with living well.
Movement.
We Were Designed to Move
Our bodies were never meant to spend hours sitting in office chairs, vehicles, or on the couch.
Yet for many of us, that’s exactly what happens.
We sit:
- At work
- During our commute
- At meals
- Watching television
- Looking at our phones
Then we wonder why our backs hurt, our joints ache, and our energy levels decline.
The truth is, movement is one of the most powerful tools we have for maintaining our health and quality of life.
And it doesn’t require a gym membership or marathon training.
Stretching Isn’t Just for Athletes
One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that stretching is only important if you’re athletic.
In reality, stretching helps:
- Improve mobility
- Maintain balance
- Reduce stiffness
- Improve posture
- Decrease the risk of falls and injuries
As we age, flexibility becomes increasingly important.
Being able to bend down, reach overhead, get in and out of vehicles, carry groceries, or play with grandchildren all depends on maintaining mobility.
Those aren’t athletic goals.
Those are life goals.
The Value of Breaking a Sweat
I’m not suggesting everyone needs intense workouts every day.
But I do believe most people benefit from doing something that elevates their heart rate and makes them break a sweat.
Walking.
Cycling.
Swimming.
Golf.
Pickleball.
Yard work.
A workout at the gym.
The activity matters less than the consistency.
Movement improves:
- Cardiovascular health
- Energy levels
- Sleep quality
- Mental health
- Stress management
- Overall longevity
And perhaps most importantly, it helps us remain independent as we age.
Healthy Aging Doesn’t Happen By Accident
Many people spend decades planning financially for retirement.
Far fewer spend the same amount of effort planning physically for retirement.
The reality is that retirement isn’t just a financial event.
It’s a lifestyle event.
When clients talk about retirement, they often mention:
- Travel
- Golf
- Hiking
- Fishing
- Playing with grandchildren
- Volunteering
- Exploring new hobbies
All of those things require one important asset:
Your health.
The best retirement plan in the world becomes far less meaningful if your body won’t allow you to enjoy it.
Small Daily Habits Create Big Results
The good news is you don’t need to become a fitness fanatic.
You don’t need expensive equipment.
You don’t need perfect discipline.
You simply need consistency.
A few ideas:
- Take a daily walk
- Stretch every morning
- Park a little farther away
- Take the stairs when possible
- Join a recreational sports league
- Schedule movement into your calendar
Small actions repeated consistently create meaningful change over time.
Just like financial planning.
It’s Never Too Late to Start
One of the biggest mistakes people make is believing they’ve waited too long.
Whether you’re 40, 60, or 80, movement matters.
Your body responds remarkably well when you start treating it better.
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is progress.
Live for Today. Plan for Tomorrow.
At YourStyle Financial, we often talk about building a life—not just building wealth.
To me, that means taking care of your financial future and your physical future.
Because the ability to enjoy life, spend time with family, travel, play, and stay independent isn’t just about having enough money.
It’s also about having enough health.
So today, I encourage you to do something simple.
Stretch.
Go for a walk.
Ride a bike.
Work in the garden.
Break a sweat.
Because motion really is lotion.
And your future self will thank you for it.
